1. Are the CLA services free?

Yes, the services in the CLA are free to any GCU student enrolled in classes.

2. How many times per day/week can I work with a tutor?

We try to limit the sessions to one session per day per tutor, and two to three times a week. However, we can make exceptions for special circumstances.

3. What software is used for online students during the session with their tutor?

Online tutors primarily use two software programs-

·         Dim Dim- Used for math and sciences. Includes a white board that can be shared visually and used with drawing tools.

·         Type with Me- Used for Writing. Allows students and tutors to share word documents and make revisions as they move throughout the session.

 

4. What are the hours of operation for the CLA?

8am-7 pm (M-Th) and 8am-5 pm (Fri), Arizona time.

5. What is the cost per hour / session for Smart Thinking after you've reached the 15 hour max?

$30.00 per hour and they charge in allotments (20, 30, 60 minutes depending on the request.

6. What is the Academic Support Social Network?

This is a social networking site we use to connect with students using an academic forum. The CLA is in the process of starting a CLA facebook page that will include information about upcoming events within our center, encourage communication on academic topics and courses, and support the learning community.

7. What do I do after I have booked for a session?

If the session you scheduled is face to face, come into the center and the tutor will be ready to work with you during your time.

 

If the session is online, the tutor will call you at the scheduled time.

8. How do you book an appointment with a tutor online?

"Book an appointment with a tutor" is the link where you schedule a session. Also on this page is an instructional video explaining how to book a session. There is also a Camstasia video explaining this on the webpage for Booking an Appointment.

10. Who runs the Student Success Webinars and when are they held?

The webinars are presented by Eva Lytle, the Director of Student Success. The webinar schedule will change by semester; further information will be on the website.

 

11. What are the qualifications of the tutors?

All the tutors have at least taken the course in which they're tutoring in and have been referred by faculty, are majoring in the subject(s), or teach the course as adjunct faculty.

13. Are the CLA tutors the same people who run the KBCOB tutoring boards through ANGEL?

The angel tutoring forums are facilitated per college. They are separate from the CLA; however they are a resource available that provides academic support for GCU students.

14. If I have a question about an assignment, who should I call first? CLA? Smart Thinking?

Always contact the CLA (602-639-8901) before Smart Thinking where you have direct contact with the administrative assistant who will help answer questions and can help you set up an appointment. Smart Thinking supports subjects not offered here in the CLA or during hours that CLA is not open.

15. Do I need to book an appt with a tutor, or can I just call?

The best way to ensure a tutor is available to answer your questions is to book an appointment. If you need immediate assistance, you can call the CLA and a tutor may be available at that time to answer questions, but there are no guarantees.
